The Suffering Servant

Could the gospel of Jesus be prophesized in the Old Testament?
Could the one who suffered to remove our transgressions and set us free be predicted long before he came to earth?
One profound passage in the bible is undeniably the prophecy of Jesus Christ. Throughout the entire Old Testament the people were unfaithful, unloyal, and disobedient to God. When Eve and Adam commited the first sin mankind was separated from God and condemned to die. In order to save such broken, unfaithful and a sinful people God had to send a redeemer, a perfect sacrifice to take it all on his shoulders.

Isaiah 52:13-53:12 (New International Version)
The Suffering and Glory of the Servant 13 See, my servant will act wisely;
he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted.
Jesus had a divine nature, and he was moral and intellectually exalted above us. 14 Just as there were many who were appalled at him
his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man
and his form marred beyond human likeness—
The Romans beat jesus during his trial to the point that he was barely recognizable, his body had been broken
15 so will he sprinkle many nations,
In 1st Peter 2:9 it explains how Jesus blood being sprinkled symbolized forgiveness.
and kings will shut their mouths because of him.
For what they were not told, they will see,
and what they have not heard, they will understand.
He is the king of kings and will reveal the truth.

Isaiah 53
1 Who has believed our message
and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot,
and like a root out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
God gave Jesus no special qualities to cause men and women to admire him personally. He made him fit to be an outcast, seen to have no value.
3 He was despised and rejected by men,
a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.
Like one from whom men hide their faces
he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Many people rejected Jesus, some even though they had witnessed a miracle. This is because of their pride and selfishness. Leaders especially despised Jesus because they saw him as a threat.
4 Surely he took up our infirmities
and carried our sorrows,
yet we considered him stricken by God,
smitten by him, and afflicted.
Jesus died to take our sin and our sorrows so we wouldn't have to. We all sin but he offered to carry those to the cross so that we wouldn't have to suffer the consequence of them. We were stained, unholy, unworthy of being in relationship with God. Jesus took those stains for us and washed us clean so we could be in relationship with him once again.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
He was nailed to the cross, pierced for our sins. He was beaten and ridiculed for our disobedience. When he suffered we were given freedom of sin, peace from his grace.
6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to his own way;
Romans 6:23 :For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." We all disobey God and turn our backs on him. We follow our own desires rather than his.
and the LORD has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
Reference to the burdens of our sin that were placed on him when he sacrificed himself.
7 He was oppressed and afflicted,
yet he did not open his mouth;
When Jesus was questioned by the high priest during his trial he stood silent and did not answer.
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
The lamb was a symbol of innocence in the bible. Jesus was innocent before his accusers but they slaughtered him anyways.
and as a sheep before her shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away.
And who can speak of his descendants?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;
for the transgression of my people he was stricken.
He was falsely judged and charged for our transgressions.
9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked,
He died alongside two convicted criminals.
and with the rich in his death,
He was buried in a rich mans tomb.
though he had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in his mouth.
Jesus was perfect; he had not sinned
10 Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.
Because of our sin and separation from God, an atonement was necessary. It was God's will to send down Jesus to be that offering.
11 After the suffering of his soul,
he will see the light of life and be satisfied ;
by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many
and he will bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,
and he will divide the spoils with the strong,
because he poured out his life unto death
and was numbered with the transgressors.
God rewarded Jesus for his sacrifice. He placed him at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. He became superior to the angels and his name above all names. He was exalted to the highest place and under him every knee shall bow.
For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
